During WP3 the SFERa consortium carried out a complete overview and best-of analysis on the state-of-the-art technologies and integration scenarios for successfully bridging the Digital Divide in rural underserved areas of Europe, strengthening the competitiveness and contribute to sustainable rural areas in the future. The main question this workpackage tried to answer was: what is the best technology mix in order to leverage the potential of satellites with proven and emerging interconnection technologies so that the goals of i2010 can be fully reached by all Regions in Europe. Several different problems are usually encountered in remote rural areas with low user density. Common problems for instance are propagation problems due to irregular terrain and high tree density. Finally a lot of new services via satellite will come into service in the broadcasting area. For many rural underserved areas in Europe interesting synergies could emerge by integrating digital broadcasting technologies into a unified communication system.
Moreover a WP3 layed the foundation for an innovative and new data collection tool called Broadband Atlas. The prototype is a geo-referenced Map service that shows in an interactive database-driven, graphical map system the Regions of Europe, the state of the digital divide and the potential benefit from connecting those Regions via Satellite together with multitechnology-Network-Interconnections. With this tool it is possible to give the European Regions the possibility of developing what-if analysis and visualize actual status of the Digital Divide in their region.
